A friendly, versatile and experienced flutist based in north London, Maddy focuses on jazz, funk and blues across the whole family of flutes: concert, alto, bass and piccolo flute. Maddy holds a performance ATCL (distinction) and LTCL diploma in jazz flute from Trinity College. Maddy graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in November 2018 at BMus level with Merit, and has been lucky enough to study with world class flutists: Gareth Lockrane, Rowland Sutherland, Joaquin Oliveros and ‘Magic’ Malik Mezzandri. Maddy is continuing her studies in the jazz department at Middlesex University.
She performs as part of her jazz quartet “Felicidade”, the Italian Job and independently. Recent venues include: Poplar Union as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, the Vortex and Karamel, Ronnie Scott’s, Le Quecumber, Milton Court at the Barbican with Guildhall Big Band, the Ned, the Spice of Life, Off the Cuff, the Junction, the Queen’s Head Islington. Recent festivals include the London Jazz festival, Menagerie, Leytonstone Music Festival, Skronkfest and the Urban Food Festival in Shoreditch.
Maddy teaches flute to children (from age 7) and adults – making lessons fun and interesting – she introduces students to the different types of flute-playing from round the world. Lessons are tailored creatively to the particular student, their background and interests, while developing their musicianship to a high level. Maddy runs a small school jazz band directing them at a recent performance in the Union Chapel in London.
Maddy leads the Girl Plays Jazz Project – a new project in North London to provide jazz education to girls aged between 8 and 12 years old – to introduce them to jazz and develop their skills as improvising musicians. Please see http://www.girlplaysjazz.org.uk for more details. In July 2018 GPJP was approved as a community interest company by Companies House. And in March 2019 to celebrate our first birthday – we were delighted to play to a sold out show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in collaboration with RSCF. In 2019 we have performed at Karamel, the Vortex and at Poplar Union as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
